In the 1880’s my Great Grandfather ran this beer house in Chapel street in Bluetown on the Isle of Sheppey.
The houses in Chapel Street have long gone but this painting shows how they may have looked in 1880 with the blue painted wooden construction.

Thank you for this watercolour of Chapel Street, now best known for a popular garden ornaments firm. It’s good to have a feel for Blue Town in that period. The legend is that Blue Town was built from “chips” carried out on their shoulders by Royal Dockyard workers and painted with naval paint. It was certainly a very lively area in its heyday. Edwin Shilling ran the Cumberland in 1871. He is one of my wife’s relatives. May I attach with full acknowledgements your image to Edwin’s entry in my family tree?

I painted it as one of my relations s ran it in the 1890s
