Perched Villages of Provence

Hello everybody

First of all thanks for looking at this blog, I really enjoy putting some of my paintings here and hope they will encourage you to visit some of these places, or if you already know them to remember them.

I have blogged many times about Provence and the Cote d’Azur.  It is a truly beautiful part of the world with sun, sea and mountains, not to mention it’s great food and wine!

One feature of the area, and of course many other areas around the Mediterranean, are the “perched’ villages and towns. They are always very interesting.   Some of course are much better known than others.   Over the years we have visited quite a lot and they always provide an interesting subject for my watercolours.

I thought therefore that it was about time to collect a number of my watercolours together under this title.

I hope you will like them as a collection and feel the warmth of the Mediterranean sun!

Enjoy your travels wherever you may be.

Rye, In East Sussex

When it comes to beautiful old towns in the UK Rye must be one of the finest. Rye has buildings built in the 14th Century and before and still retains it’s fine character. Rye is one of the Cinque Ports founded by Henry III in the 13th Century.

Once right on the sea it is now a few miles inland but with inlets from the sea reaching up to the town. Nearby is the Military canal, an invasion fortification built in the early 19th century.

The town was once the haunt of smugglers and the Mermaid Inn, rebuilt in 1407 is still a centre of attraction in the town. The town was once fortified but only the Landgate remains of the original four gates to town.

The views of the town, perched on a hill are an invitation to paint, especially when the town silhouette is seen against various skies.

Here are just a few painting of the town painted over the years and some more recently. It will always be a place to return to as it has been subject for many painters over the centuries.

If you haven’t visited then I urge you  to do so one day, and in the meantime I hope you enjoy these watercolours.

Escape from the snow

This January we managed to have a few days on the Cote d’Azur , escaping quite lot of snow and disruption tin the UK.

Although even there we had some rain, we also had beautiful sunshine and some welcome warmth.

We spent one day visiting friends in San Remo and Dolce Acqua, just across the border in Italy. The old towns of both are quite amazing. I have included here one painting from our last visit to San Remo in 2011, but the others I managed to do last weekend. Also there is a watercolour of the view from Villefranche across to Port Passable on Cap Ferrat. We love Villefranche where you can sit at the waters edge and enjoy both the view, and a great lunch. If you are ever there do visit the Chapelle St Pierre at the waterfront. Inside there are wonderful murals by Jean Cocteau.

Back now in the UK, the snow is still here and it is a lot colder, maybe spring will arrive soon!

I hope you enjoy these four paintings.

Churches in the Landscape

It is no real surprise that Churches offer the painter a great subject, often as the focal point of a painting.

Looking through some of my watercolours of the past few years there are many with Churches featured in them. The beautiful architecture of Churches and their often prominent locations provides an exciting subject for me in many paintings.

Some of these are painted as they may have been in the past, to help illustrate family history events , whilst others just bring the subject together in a pleasing way (to me anyway!).

I have gathered together in this large post some from my archives of painting from various locations around Europe.

I hope  you enjoy seeing them, I am sure many will have visited them on their own holidays.

October on the Côte d’Azur

Well back in the South of France again, this time in splendid October weather. October is often a great time of year to be in this area, with blue skies and a temperature of 25 C.we ave also been lucky enough to have been invited to a wedding in a beautiful Chateau near Le Muy.

Not a lot of time to paint but here are afew nonetheless. We also managed a quick boat trip from St Maxime to St Tropez. It is the best way to get to St Tropez, avoiding the traffic. Quick lunch in the little back streets of St Tropez and then back to the ferry.

it is so good to enjoy the beautiful weather at this time of year and the Wedding was just terrific!

Sicily May 2012

Well here I am in beautiful Sicily for a few days enjoying the late spring sunshine

Staying at Taormina we have been travelling around some fairly local places and it has given me the chance to paint a few quick watercolours of this beautiful coast line round Mount Etna.

These will serve as a reminder , together with the photos for some better painting once home.

More to come I hope but here are some painted over the past few days

Not only is the scenery great but the very friendly people serve up great food and terrific local wine!

I hope they either encourage you to visit there or relive happy memories.

Travelling in California

We have been lucky enough to visit many golf courses around the world. This spring we are golfing in San Diego and in between rounds I have managed to find a little time for some painting. So here are two paintings of the Grand Del Mar course, and a few others of California.

While we were there it was the Masters weekend  at Augusta and although we were not there I thought a quick watercolour of the famous 12th hole might be good so it is here too.

Our travels in California took us to la Jolla and Carmel and these two paintings show a little of the beauty of these coastal areas.

Before travelling home we spent two wonderful days in Yosemite national park and then a day in the Napa Valley and lastly San Francisco.

I hope you enjoy them to look at as much as we did in visiting such beautiful places, and for me painting them as a reminder of our journey.

More to come over the next few weeks I hope.

Paintings of unusual sizes

Every now and again a subject suggests a different size than normal.

Sometimes much larger or wider or even a vertical strip.

Whilst looking through some earlier paintings I noticed these which make the point.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I did painting them!
