Painting a little bigger!

All those years ago when I started painting watercolours from our travels around the world I found that small paintings were the thing to try.

Today I still enjoy quick and quite small paintings, even the odd postcard to friends.

Generally my paintings are 12 by 10 or 14 by 10 inches, as that does work for travel very well , and recently I have bought an A4 KHADI watercolour sketchbook for our next few trips.

But recently I wanted to try something just a bit larger, and a little more impressionistic. So I decided to go back to a photo taken a while ago of Florence and this watercolour, 20 inches by 14 is the result.

I am not entirely happy with it , I had a vision in my mind of the finished article which hasn’t quite occurred but I thought I would share it with you.

This view of Florence has thousands of roofs, so the idea was to leave those purely impressionistic whilst highlighting the Duomo and nearby major landmarks.

I hope you find it interesting, and back to more travel paintings in a little while.

Happy Travelling

About brianswatercolours

After spending 40 years in Aerospace I now enjoy painting watercolours of our travels around the world. I also paint for others who would like reminders of there favourite places. Most of my paintings are painted from photos that I have taken, or taken by others. This blog shows some paintings from Yvonne's and my travels together. 1. Hi there Brian,

Actually, I applaud your effort to try larger paintings, but only if you enjoy that format. I like it!

Hope all is well on your end. We haven’t asked about your back lately – were you able to golf while in France?

We have been enjoying three beautiful weeks of Florida weather and return home Sunday. A little cold there. And I’m really beginning to get excited about our trip with you as it won’t be long now.

well – much love to you both.

    Annette.

  2. I like this a lot … Florence is another city I would like to visit one day. I love the colors here, and the dreamy (impressionistic!) feel. It may not be exactly what you envisioned, but I’d say you did well. 🙂 Just spent some more time poking around your wonderful blog here and found some paintings I hadn’t seen before. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods!

Your books on Blurb are very good by the way. I am now printing using a Site called Peecho, a lower cost printer company but very good.
      Best regards
